Jordan Gorelick, Mechanical and Systems Engineer

WHY ARE YOU A MECHANICAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEER?

As I grew up, my favorite toy progressed from Thomas the Tank Engine wooden railroads, to Lincoln Logs, to Kinex, to Legos, and then to Erector Sets. I always wanted to build something new and find a different way of putting pieces together. Whether that was jigsaw puzzle-esque like the railroad tracks or metal plates with screws and bolts like the Erector Sets, each of these toys allowed me to create something each time I used them. When I got to college at Cornell University, I knew that mechanical engineering was the perfect choice for me.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB AT SOULO?

My favorite part of working at Soulo was being able to make an impact in the lives of older adults. Whenever we would review our product, the first questions we always asked were, “How much will this help our customer? What changes can we make to do even more?” Working in an environment where everyone cares so much about the customer was always a great feeling.

SHOW US A PICTURE OF YOUR DESK AND EXPLAIN WHY IT LOOKS THE WAY IT DOES.

This is my work from home setup that I created to work most efficiently and comfortably:

  1. Logitech MX Anywhere 2S Mouse: This is a wireless mouse that can quickly switch between three different devices using a button on the bottom. This makes it very easy to switch between my full time job and Soulo work.

  2. Logitech MX Master Keys Keyboard: This is a wireless keyboard that has the same device switching capabilities as my mouse, and it integrates seamlessly with the mouse in other ways as well. For example, I can connect both devices to only one USB adapter in my computer, and the keyboard has customizable keys that allow me to use the mouse movement as extra computer inputs.

  3. 2021 Macbook Pro: I have always been an Apple person for my own devices, and I do all of my Soulo work from this computer. I customized its specifications to be extremely powerful and allow me to model our designs without any hiccups.

  4. Jabra Evolve2 75 Headset: This is the wireless headset that I use for my full time job during the daytime hours. It allows me to be on long meetings comfortably and does not keep me tethered to my desk.

  5. Anker Qi Wireless Charging Stand: This is a charger that I use to rest my phone on while I am working or just sitting at my desk. It allows me to easily see any notifications that come in while also charging.

  6. OWC Thunderbolt Dock: This docking station allows me to connect my Macbook Pro to both of my monitors, wired internet, my headset, SD cards for my 3D printers, and any four USB-A cables that I could need to either power or transfer data with using only a single Thunderbolt 4 cable to my computer.

  7. Datacolor SpyderX Pro: This is a colorimeter that allows me to tune all of my screens to match true colors. Many monitors do not come calibrated out of the box, and therefore, colors look different between different screens. This device helps to sync all of the screens to look as close to the same as possible.

  8. Dell Ultrasharp Monitor: This is a QHD monitor that’s main focus is its color. It can get extremely close to displaying colors as they do in real life. Therefore, I use this monitor whenever I am working on something where color is an essential part. This monitor also has a built-in docking station which I use to connect my work laptop to all of my devices using only one cable.

  9. HP zBook 15 G6: This is the laptop that I use for my full time job. It is a high-powered engineering laptop that allows me to run high-powered processes.

  10. Dell Studio Monitor: This is an UHD monitor that’s main focus is resolution. It does not have as great colors as the other monitor, but it does have a higher resolution. This allows me to really focus on details in my work.

  11. Sony WH-1000XM4 Headphones: These are my preferred wireless headphones to listen to music or watch tv with if I am listening privately. They have great audio quality and many built-in features that make them extremely easy and convenient to use.

  12. 2016 Macbook Pro: This is my old personal laptop that no longer runs well. When I got my new laptop, I decided to convert this laptop into a Windows desktop computer. It is also connected to both of my monitors and allows me to use Windows-specific programs for Soulo.

  13. Brydge Macbook Vertical Docking Station: This is a vertical stand for my old Macbook Pro, allowing it to take up less space on my desk. The docking station also connects the computer to both of my monitors.

  14. iPad Pro: I use my iPad Pro to complete all tasks that require hand drawing or sketching. Using the iPad really helps me to visualize a design before modeling it.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE GADGET THAT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

My favorite gadget is my Roomba. I still can’t get over the fact that I can be at work half an hour from home, and come home to a clean, vacuumed room. All I have to do is press a button on my phone, and it gets done.

WHO IS AN OLDER ADULT IN YOUR LIFE WHO HAS BEEN AN INSPIRATION TO YOU?

One older adult in my life who has been an inspiration to me is my grandpa. After graduating from NYU dental school, he started out as a dentist in the Army. After he was discharged, he went on to run his own practice for most of his life until very recently. He really demonstrates hard work, and spending time with him growing up helped to shape me into who I am today. Having him as my dentist also made going to the dentist much more tolerable!
